Becoming a driving instructor - Driving instructor training course and career information

Part-Three

Part-three is a practical teaching test which, like Part-Two, lasts for approximately one hour. Also like Part-Two you are only allowed three attempts, if you were to fail all three you would have to start all over again with Part-One.

During this test you have to give driving instruction and demonstrate your ability to assess and correct driving errors.

The test uses 'role play' - the examiner simulates the drive of a couple of learner drivers at different stages of training, your job is to sort out any problems exhibited and develop new skills

Part-Three is split into two 'phases' each lasting about twenty-five minutes.

During the first phase the examiner will play the role of a learner with little or no experience of the subject that you asked to teach.

During the second phase the examiner will play the role of a pupil with more experience and prior knowledge relevant to the subject you are asked to teach (this could be the role of an experienced driver looking for help and advice).

You will be assessed on your ability to match your instruction to the level of the pupils who are portrayed, observe and correct any errors and maintain a safe controlled learning environment.

Problem?

Traditionally, Part-Three has been viewed as a problem area for many students, however this need not be the case.

Problems typically arise because of poor or insufficient training or because people have made a wrong career choice.

This is why we stress that it is so important to 'do your homework' before embarking upon your new career or risk disappointment later on ...
